Seven days away, one thoughtfully packed bag
Build a flexible packing list around your plans, the weather and access to laundry.

Pack for activities and laundry opportunities, not one completely separate outfit for every day. Try a small, coordinated clothing list, then adjust it to your climate, needs and actual itinerary.
Write down the week before the wardrobe
List the activities that truly need different clothing: a formal dinner, a walk in wet weather, swimming or a work meeting. Check the expected weather close to departure. Decide whether you can and want to do laundry. A seven-day trip with washing facilities needs a different plan from a remote trip without them.
The list below is a starting point for an adult on a mild-weather trip with some reuse or laundry. It is not a rule about how much anyone should need.
Start with a small clothing set
- Four versatile tops and two bottoms that work together.
- One comfortable travel outfit, worn on departure.
- Underwear and socks matched to your laundry plan.
- Sleepwear and a light layer.
- One additional pair of shoes only if your activities need it.
- Activity-specific additions such as swimwear or a rain layer.
Lay combinations out before packing. If an item works with only one outfit, ask whether you have a more flexible option. Add the clothing that makes your particular trip comfortable rather than treating minimal packing as a competition.
Keep a separate essentials list
Documents, glasses, necessary personal items, chargers and travel arrangements deserve their own check. Clothing can distract from small things that are difficult to replace during the journey. Put the items you need in transit into an accessible personal-item bag.

Pack toiletries for your route
Check the security rules at each airport you will use, including your return journey. For a U.S. checkpoint, Delta’s guidance describes containers of up to 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in a single quart-size clear bag for ordinary carry-on liquids. Exceptions can apply to necessary items. Follow the relevant security authority’s instructions for your own situation.
Bring amounts suited to the trip, and check what your accommodation supplies. Protect anything that could leak and keep it away from documents and electronics.
Do one complete trial pack
Include the awkward shapes: shoes, chargers and a filled toiletry pouch. Close the bag without straining the zippers, measure its exterior and check its weight against the operator’s allowance. Leave some flexibility for the journey home. If it does not fit, remove something before adding organizers that take up room themselves.
Turn the plan into a checklist
Our free interactive packing checklist lets you tick off essentials, switch trip types and add your own items. It saves your choices in this browser and has a print view. Use it as a reminder after deciding what your trip actually requires.
